Pogo sent us another update complete with pictures!

12/23/2004  What a wonderful surprise to discover an update on Pogo and Emma right before the holidays in our e-mail box!  Pogo and Emma are clearly the best of friends and very happy with one another!  As you can also see, Pogo continues to display his foot for sympathy and Mom just loves it!  Here is what Mom had to share with us in this update with the pictures she so thoughtfully included.  :)

"Pogo is very happy these days and it feels as though he’s always been a part of my little family! He has warmed up to me, nudging me with his nose, letting me pet him without running away, and sometimes he’ll even let me hold him. Emma and Pogo are very content with their new bunny friend – sleeping, eating, playing, and sitting together. My fear that getting another rabbit would cause Emma to stop being friendly with me were completely unfounded as she is even more affectionate than before! The other week I put her in there for a time-out as she was clawing and digging at the carpet. I left for a minute and when I returned, I found both rabbits frolicking around in the living room! Pogo had pushed aside the bottom lever to the playpen (the only one I had latched) to free his girlfriend! I couldn’t believe it.  If you are interested in knowing how he’s doing from now on, I am going to start a website devoted to my rabbits in two weeks: www.luckyfoot.org"

10/21/2004  Sue said it was almost love at first sight between my rabbit and Pogo and there were a few hours of blissful serenity after we returned home until Emma realized that Pogo wasn’t just visiting – he was staying for good and using all her things! Pogo was clearly in love with Emma from the get-go, but Emma needed a little more encouragement. She tried to establish herself as top bun and, I think, has done so to her satisfaction. Pogo is a very patient bunny because she really acted crazy for a couple of days! He likes to follow her around and nuzzle under belly. He also runs to her in comfort if he’s scared (mostly me coming near him). Emma grooms him every once in awhile and I’m sure she’ll do it more as they get to know each other better, but most of the time, they sit side-by-side.

I started laughing during one of the first couple of days home because I saw Pogo stick out his rear leg in such a dramatic way and held it there for all to see. I didn’t realize until I read the website on him that that was the foot that had been broken and that he liked to do that to gain sympathy!

He’s having some problems keeping his pellets/urine in the litter box, so I keep a keen eye on him when I let him out of the playpen when I come home from work (he is doing better, though). He is very energetic – and a very hefty guy! I’ve never seen an animal that eager to leave the confines of his cage. He’s always trying to wiggle by me when I open the door to change the litter, clean, or add food. Whenever he realizes I’m in the living room, he’ll hop to the door to let me know he’s ready to be released. (Considering Emma continues to dig all the litter onto the floor, I can’t really blame him for wanting to have some space to himself!) He seems to be smart and friendly and Emma still has to come to terms with the fact that there is another bunny that will be getting some attention. She likes to hop over and interrupt any petting by sticking her head under my hand.

One funny thing that happened while they were still trying to figure who was top bunny was the day after he arrived home. Emma kicked him out of the litter box so she could lie in it. He sat there on the outside for a minute and decided he wasn’t going to give up his favorite place to sit! He pushed her over and seemed content enough to lie next to her, with one leg hanging outside the litter box. I got a larger litter box, big enough for the two of them. Here is a picture of them sitting in it after their little scuffle for ownership.

If Pogo hasn’t decided what to do with me, he adores Emma and wants to be with her every second of the day. He’s content enough to sit right next to her even if she’s eating all his food! He has also helped her to become more adventurous around the apartment by investigating areas that she used to avoid.

The Rabbit Haven Newsletter was fun and informative to read. It makes me appreciate what you’re doing to make every bunny life as full as it can be. I can tell Pogo appreciates all the work, time, and love that you dedicated to him so that his foot could be saved. He loves to hop and doesn’t take his near leg-loss for granted – it also helps him to keep up with his new girlfriend!

10/02/2004  Pogo's chapter of life with Rabbit Haven comes to a close and his new, forever one begins.  He has been welcomed into a wonderful family, complete with a beautiful bunny friend, Emma, who Pogo absolutely adores!

08/27/2004  Pogo continues to reside at the Rabbit Haven shelter and is still awaiting a forever home.  He will need a quiet home full of love and patience where he can let his "hare" (pun intended hehehe) hang down and let the real him emerge.  Pogo has completely recovered from his foot injury and can run and jump with the best of them!  If you would like to open your heart and home to this little, precious guy, please contact us at adoptions@rabbithaven.org.

The pin was removed from Pogo's foot the 11th of November.  The bone had mended back together nicely and Pogo is recovering quickly.  He will still hold out his hind foot when he wants sympathy and is quite obvious about it.  :)  Pogo will soon be ready for adoption and his picture added to the adoption pages.  This little guy is not only brave and courageous, he's also very sweet and full of personality!  We're proud of you Pogo!

Pogo, a six month old all-boy bun, was brought to Rabbit Haven with a severely fractured foot that will require several surgeries.  Rabbit Haven is currently looking at $710.00 in medical expenses for Pogo.  It is our goal to give this little guy every chance possible to keep his foot.  Without these surgeries, his only other option would be to have his hind, right foot amputated at the knee.

Pogo is being a champ!  His personality is coming back daily.  One of his very favorite things to do is to burrow under a blanket and then poke his head out to watch me doing the web site.  His foot appears to be doing nicely; I rewrapped it today after he had pulled the other bandaging off.  In about 2 1/2 weeks he'll go back into the vet so that the pin can be removed and we'll have a much better idea on how the foot is healing.  We'll bring you an update after his visit.  Ü
